The Art of Janelle McKain

"The art I create is inherently ambiguous. I begin with little or no pre-conceived idea and "channel" the drawing as I am working. I do not predict or force a composition, I simply allow the imagery to come forth. Attempting to meet a client's direction on paid commission can be extremely tense and generally overwhelming for me, although I have done that type of work. The true artist comes through when I am allowed to freely create with no rules, no requirements, no deadlines. After retiring in 2013 from 32 years in art education, I am now living the dream I have yearned for all my adult life.
My work tends to defy generalized explanation with its "other-worldly" surreal and juxtaposed imagery. No intellectualized jargon can bind the drawing into conventional boundaries, and this is how I prefer it to be.
My hope is the viewer will be intrigued and inspired by my work on a spiritual or enlightened level. I hope to transport those who see my work into a place and time far away from harsh reality. Viewers are asked to use their own imaginations to interpret my work through the lens of their own perception. I will not offer suggestions for what they should or should not perceive."
